34th INEDITS European Annual Meeting

34th INEDITS European Annual Meeting – Playing with cinema
October 22-23-24, 2024, Bologna

INEDITS Amateur Films / Memory of Europe is the European Association founded in France in 1991 to promote the collection, preservation, study, and promotion of amateur and family cinema. Today, it brings together more than 70 members from 13 European countries, who gather annually for a conference organized by a member archive. This serves as a moment of reflection, sharing, and updating on practices related to amateur and private audiovisual heritage.

The 34th European conference will be hosted in Bologna, organized by the Home Movies Foundation – National Family Film Archive – with a program that anticipates and intertwines with the 17th edition of the Archivio Aperto festival, taking place on October 22, 23, and 24.
This 34th edition will focus on cinema as play and the expressive, creative possibilities, the discovery of one’s identity and passions that the small-gauge format has invited young people to explore and cultivate from a very early age.

PLAYING WITH CINEMA

In the early experiences of children, adolescents, and young adults with small-gauge cameras, all the spontaneity and lightheartedness that cinema should always carry with it emerge.
By playfully and challengingly appropriating their parents’ film equipment, boys and girls seem ready to break and redefine boundaries, nodding to cult films shown in cinemas but with the lightness of those who wish to subvert the rules laid out in the manuals of “how to do.” Between amateur and educational experiences, these young creative hubs sometimes become collective laboratories, where people take on roles behind the camera, or as actors, screenwriters, editors, costume designers, or makeup artists: the key is to experiment while having fun.

THE PROGRAM

The program for the 34th INEDITS European Conference will feature three days of updates, workshops, roundtables, and screenings aimed at archivists, researchers, curators, and national and international scholars. Some sessions will be open to the public and free of charge, for those interested in contemporary practices in the restoration, digitization, cataloging, and promotion of private audiovisual heritage.

The full program for the conference will be published on the Archivio Aperto website on October 1, 2024.
