News from the Near Future contains a number of key elements in the work of Fiona Tan: it explores memory and the passing of time through archive footage in black and white sourced from the Amsterdam Filmmuseum and tinted in order to create an almost painterly texture. The recurrent motif is water – the sea, on which sail all kinds of boats from small yachts to much bigger steamships; waves washing the seashore; landscapes with huge waterfalls and the disasters that leave floods in their wake remind us of the ambivalence in the relationship between man and nature.

Fiona Tan è un’artista che lavora principalmente con mezzi di comunicazione basati sull’obiettivo, come il cinema e la fotografia. È rinomata a livello internazionale per le sue installazioni sapientemente realizzate e intensamente commoventi, nelle quali le esplorazioni dell’identità, della memoria e della storia sono fondamentali.
Tan ha rappresentato i Paesi Bassi alla Biennale di Venezia del 2009. Le sue opere sono presenti in numerose collezioni d’arte internazionali, tra cui la Tate Modern, il New Museum di New York, il Guggenheim Museum, lo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam e il Centre Pompidou. Il suo primo lungometraggio History’s Future è stato presentato in anteprima nel gennaio 2015 all’International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) ed è stato candidato al Tiger Award. Ascent, il suo secondo film, è stato presentato in anteprima al Festival di Locarno nel 2016 ed è stato proiettato in diversi festival tra cui Karlovy Vary, London Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, oltre che in molti musei e istituzioni d’arte contemporanea. Dearest Fiona è il terzo lungometraggio di Tan ed è stato presentato in anteprima mondiale alla Berlinale nel febbraio 2023.
